Furness Show 5-9: Mariners lose, Chris Crawford and Jed Collins

Red flags abound with the Mariners. Ian talks about what makes Jake Dickert so great, and respects Kalen DeBoer for the same reasons. Plus, the importance of financial literacy for athletes.
We revisit our conversation with Jake Dickert yesterday, because there's a lot to chew on within it. He discusses the high retention rate for his team during NIL and transfer portal issues, why he loves coaching and why players want to stay in Pullman. The Mariners lost badly today, dropping the series to the Twins. Ian provides the 'unhappy totals'. Chris Crawford of My oh Why did a 41 second recap today on YouTube, so he joins us to do it live on radio. What are the red flags that we should be paying attention to? Where was the game lost? It looked like the first inning, but what happened to Logan Gilbert? It's very concerning to see the offense fail to do anything today. Why does the offense fail to come through for three specific pitchers? Chris is concerned about the bullpen. There were an alarming number of coaching changes throughout the last 12 months, but Ian still thinks the Kraken made the right call. Could we see a change in the coaching ranks for the Mariners? It looks like there's more competition for the Kraken when it comes to the head coaching search.Jed Collins, Former WSU Cougar and NO Saint joins to talk about why things didn't work out between Sean Payton and Russell Wilson, the importance of financial literacy, especially in the NIL world and how people can educate themselves at a younger age. Plus, when donating to a school, how do you choose between NIL and Athletic Funds?

Furness Show 5-8: Mariners win, Ryan Clark and Jake Dickert

The Mariners won in a big way yesterday and Ian took great interest in the ebbs and flows of the game. It was a bummer to see Taylor Saucedo with an injured knee, as he proves to be of great value in the bullpen. Welcome back to reality, Oakland. We relive the Trailblazers knocking out the Thunder in 2019. Ian wants to know, especially with the NBA returning, whether fans still harbor disdain for Oklahoma City. Ian gets sports stress from watching them and just cannot stand the idea of them winning, of which they have a good chance this year. Ian has a Mayor of Maple Valley update! We are awaiting an update on Taylor Saucedo. Ian has disdain for the Thunder. Will the WNBA continue to grow in popularity with the addition of Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, or is it a 'one hit wonder'? Ian is going to be on air forever, as his off-button is broken. Odds are out for the Super Bowl and the Seahawks come in third to win the NFC West, while San Francisco is the favorite to win the Super Bowl. The Seahawks are 22nd to win it all. What are our reasonable expectations for this year's team? Ryan Clark, ESPN NHL Writer joins to give us the latest on what he sees in the Kraken coaching search, what he's seen in the Stanley Cup Playoffs and who he expects to see in the finals. Jake Dickert, WSU HC joins Ian to recap spring ball and discuss the retention the Cougs saw on their team this year, especially compared to other programs that got poached. He talks about what makes Washington State special and why he's so proud to be in Pullman. Plus, the players that got drafted and signed in the NFL this year.

Furness Show 5-7: Manny Acta, Joe Sheehan and Sonics talk

We have a new studio sponsor! Ian almost drove off the road when he heard Chris Kidd had to say about potentially naming the NBA team here in Seattle something other than the Sonics. Ian can't fathom it happening. Manny Acta, Mariners 3B Coach joins to give us the state of the Mariners right now. He knew the pitching staff would carry them and the offense will get going. He explains what's different for Josh Rojas this year, as well as his bar for on base percentage, despite it being down across the league. Julio Rodriguez is much better than where he is right now, but he's prone to slow starts. The team has the utmost confidence in him. Whenever you're not happy with the Mariners, talk to Manny Acta. While Julio might be 'down' for his talent level right now, he's still above league average. Plus, the pitching remains among the best in baseball, but can't be wasted.Joe Sheehan, The Joe Sheehan Newsletter tells us what numbers fans should actually be paying attention to. There are hundreds of stats all over the place, so how do we distill it? Joe breaks it down. Also, this is an extremely low hitting season across the league. The WNBA is finally chartering flights for their teams - Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese have a lot to do with it. Ian says it's long overdue. What was Chris Kidd thinking when he brought up possibly naming the new NBA team anything but The Sonics?

Furness Show 5-6: Mollywhop Monday, Sonics talk and Corbin Smith

Ian had a great weekend and completely appreciates those who filled in on Friday. Shoutout to the beautiful campus of Gonzaga. What do we make of the Seahawks after getting a look at the rookies out at VMAC this weekend? Ian breaks down what he sees in the top-heavy draft and where there still may be needs. Ian wants you to tell the truth - did you believe the Mariners would be where they are right now after the rough start?  We are anxiously awaiting the return of the NBA here in Seattle, and we take a listen to what Aaron Levine had to say about it last night. It's not 'if' they return now, it's 'when' - and all signs point to fall of 2027. Ownership and a plan is in place, so what's next? Ian discusses the one element missing from the NBA return to Seattle. Mollywhop Monday! Chris Crawford and Nathan Bishop join to talk about the Mariners series win in Houston. They give a reasonable take on where the team stands right now, Julio's upside and just what a star he is. Eyes can be deceiving, but the numbers tell the truth. Corbin Smith, Locked on Seahawks joins Ian to give his first impressions of a Mike Macdonald-run practice, Byron Murphy II - who doesn't skip leg day - and Christian Haynes. Chris Crawford and Anders Hirst are in for Ian, with Jessamyn at Seahawks minicamp so we have you covered on all things Seattle sports. We take a look at things out at rookie minicamp and preview the series against the Astros. Plus, are you more interested in watching the NBA playoffs or the NHL playoffs right now, considering Seattle doesn't have anyone in either?  How are the vibes out at Seahawks? Well it's not a complete scrapping of the Pete Carroll atmosphere, because Carroll and John Schneider created it together.  John Schneider is still here and there hasn't been some complete overhaul of the fun we've seen throughout the 14 year era.
Patrick Beverly is a piece of work with how he treated ESPN's Malinda Adams last night by refusing to talk to her since she 'doesn't subscribe to his podcast'.  The Mariners take on the Astros right now and although they're struggling at the moment, experts don't expect that to continue. Chris wants Julio in the leadoff spot, but understands why the 2-spot makes sense, especially when you look at the analytics. Plus, Cal Raleigh at DH just doesn't work for him - he needs a day off or to catch.  Seahawks Head Coach Mike Macdonald speaks after rookie minicamp today and we take you to the press conference live. We also hear from Byron Murphy IIChristian Haynes and Tyrese Knight after practice.  The Daily Power Play!  Chris, Anders and Jess react to the press conferences we just heard and getting to learn Mike Macdonald as he learns the ropes of running an NFL practice at the helm. Ian gives his own insight on what he sees for them. Sam Howell is not an afterthought. Joe Sheehan of The Joe Sheehan Newsletter joins to take us inside the Mariners. He still believes the Mariners have the best rotation in baseball and that's without their number 5. The Mariners are succeeding at the moment, but this pitching staff can't be wasted through a lack of offense. We also take a look ahead to the series against the Astros next weekend. This week is a good chance to catch Houston before they get things rolling. Mick Hoffman, WIAA Executive Director joins Ian to talk about making girl's flag football a varsity in Washington State. Ian thinks this has legs, but Mick explains the work that needs to happen to make it work.
